The Cardiology Department at Wellington Hospital in conjunction with the University of Otago, Wellington are inviting applications for a full-time permanent joint academic and clinical Consultant Cardiologist position.
The position provides an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified person who has experience in cardiovascular medicine, teaching and research.
Wellington Hospital is part of the Capital and Coast District Health board providing care for the Wellington region as well as tertiary care for the Central New Zealand Region (pop. 1.1 Million). The Cardiology Department provides services in all major subspecialties of Cardiology including intervention, electrophysiology, device therapy, cardiac imaging, adult congenital heart disease, heart failure and structural heart disease.
The University of Otago is one of New Zealand’s largest and most research-intensive universities, currently enjoying a high position in the QS World University ranking in the top 1%. The University of Otago Wellington School of Medicine is collocated with Wellington Hospital. The Campus has extensive student support and learning facilities on site and has recently built award-winning new facilities.

Responsibilities will include undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment, research and clinical service. You will personally engage in research, with a focus on expanding our active clinical and laboratory based research program, with many opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. You would be joining an existing network of research within Cardiology, the University as well as established links throughout the city.
Your Skills and Experience
- Appropriate academic qualification (PhD or equivalent higher research degree).
- Clinical (FRACP or equivalent) qualification and be registered or eligible for registration as a specialist with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
- Established skills in imaging, heart failure, device therapy and/or congenital heart disease.
- Skills and experience in tertiary teaching.
- A track record in research.
The University component will be 0.5 FTE based in the Department of Medicine, Wellington School of Medicine. The clinical component will be 0.5 FTE offered by the Capital and Coast District Health Board within the Department of Cardiology. Appointment will be to the position of Clinical Senior Lecturer.
