A multi-year research project has been commissioned by NHMRC’s Health Translation Advisory Committee to examine the issues and opportunities in the training and career pathways for medical, nurse, allied health and midwife clinician researchers in Australia. The first having been completed earlier this year.

A workforce survey and in-depth telephone interviews made it clear that clinician researchers in Australia experience a number of challenges throughout their careers, including accessing suitable mentors and finding protected time for research activities. We also found better clinician researcher workforce data are needed, such as rates of attraction and retention of clinician researchers, something NHMRC will seek to improve in collaboration with regulating bodies.
